Description
The Cardhu Scotch Whisky Distillery Highland Scotland, lies in the heart of upper Speyside. As Scotch distilleries go, Cardhu is among the most significant given it's place in history and the transitions which the place has gone through with links to other distilleries and indeed one of the greatest names borne of the world of Scotch whisky, Johnnie Walker. Interesting fact that in 1885 when Cardhu was rebuilt the copper stills were sold to one William Grant who went on to create Glenfiddich another legendary chapter. In this picture we see the location as it appears today under the guidance of Diageo, quite simply Cardhu still remains as iconic as ever with one of, if not the richest history of all the Whisky Legends. The real deal from the early days of illicit brewing, celebrating over 200 years of liquid gold. As they say, todays rain, tomorrow's whisky. Long live the black rock from forth first sprung the water for John Cumming and his wife Hellen's Cardhu Distillery.
And the best part of the story, well, Helen Cumming was indeed a remarkable women of the era While women are often absent from the history of Scotch whisky, they actually played a key role in the industry from its inception. Helen Cumming is described as, ''a most remarkable character and a woman of many resources; she possessed the courage and energy of a man, and in devices and plans to evade the gaugers, no man nor woman could equal her.” Her prowess at evading alcohol taxation was legendary. Helen would disguise her distillery as a bakery, and then serve tax collectors tea while she surreptitiously raised a red flag above the farmhouse to signal to other distillers that the revenuers were in the neighbourhood. And so the logo for this iconic whisky is lady with the red flag appearing on every bottle of whiskey you have in your drinks cabinet, and all over the world. That sure is a very happy ending indeed, don't you think... and so the story goes on and on forever.
