Description
The Assynt area North West Scotland is in my blood and the place can shift my soul any time it wants. Amid some of the oldest rock types in the world, I always feel alive and soulful here, some folks say it's difficult to leave a place but I never worry, as I know I will always feel the same when I return. There is an authenticity and purity to this location which cuts right to the heart of existence and imagination for old nostalgic times and the bright new future ahead. Such is the the power of the land. This is the lands of MacLeod and MacDonald and a few other clans
Assynt includes the magnificent mountains of Suilven, Canisp, Cul Mor and Cul Beag, a traditional Victorian hunting Lodge, Glencanisp Lodge, and an awe-inspiring, wildlife-rich world of lochans, rivers and hills. Canisp is an isolated mountain that stands in the Glencanisp Forest, a large rock and water wilderness.
Canisp stands in a geologically important area. It is part of the Moine Thrust Belt and is typical of many of the Assynt hills in that it rises from a base of Lewisian Gneiss and is composed of Torridonian sandstone capped by Cambrian quartzite giving the hill a distinctive light grey crown.
Canisp was formed when surrounding rocks were eroded during an episode of glaciation, while the ridge was left poking above the level of the ice sheet.
