Stoer Lighthouse located on a far northwest peninsula of Scotland's western Highlands, is one of my favourite nautical atmospheric locations, as although the lighthouse is a modest 45 feet high, given it's curious location and outbuildings at the base , the lighthouse appears more of a chunky block beacon with really only the light rising to shine out to the horizon. Nevertheless, she was built by legendary brothers who knew exactly how to design for each location, by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1870 after being identified as one of forty-five sites in Scotland where a lighthouse was necessary to protect shipping. Somewhat stumpy as the light house is , she still functions perfectly given that the height of the cliffs on which it sits means it can be seen at a distance of 24 miles (39 km) out at sea. The outer Hebridean islands of Lewis and Harris lie beyond, next stop the Americas.
