On the Isle of Tiree, an inner Hebridean island of Scotland, there are several perfect examples of a Thatched Whitewashed, Hebridean Black House's. The Black Houses are the vernacular dwelling type for the region and their name comes from the darkness of the internal space on account of small fenestration openings in the walls, due to the structure of the walls in response to the harsh climate of the locality. I love this house and it will always hold a place in my heart from my first trip staying out on the beautiful west side of the Isle of Tiree.
