Description
At Kildrummy Castle Aberdeenshire Scotland, the back story includes Robert The Bruce. Around 800 years ago Kildrummy castle's long and dramatic history began. This image is just one part of the castle. The last ruin from the period in eastern Scotland Kildrummy is the largest available for the visitor to explore. I went many years ago and returned with my two little nephews. The scale of the place is great for children with lots of areas to hide in and so it takes some time to get around when there is an imaginative story around every corner and lots of places to crawl into. I did not always fit into all the narrower places. The walls are very thick and there are many different stone features which all require explanation to the young inquisitive mind. Even as a ruin, Kildrummy’s great size and strength are easy to appreciate. Though north-east Scotland has many fine strongholds, Kildrummy is known as ‘the noblest of northern castles’. In its medieval heyday, the huge castle dominated Strathdon as seat of the mighty earls of Mar.
