Description
The Portsoy harbour Aberdeenshire, on the North sea coastline, is the oldest harbour, on the Moray Firth, so it was a perfect location for the Gillies Mackinnon, movie which was a remake of the legendary historic movie Whisky Galore. The harbour dates back to the seventeenth century and the village even farther back to when it became a burgh under Sir Walter Ogilivie. Surnames are everything around here. Personally, this harbour wall is the place where I spent making many memories with my two little nephews, there is a great deal to explore behind the scenes and the place changes dramatically according to whether the tide is out or in, with lots to observe along the way. It takes a toddler a surprsingly short time to reach the top of the wee grassy mound seen in this picture! At low tide of course the foundation of the structure can be seen here which is a perfect example of a harbour being built upon natural, much older solid never going anywhere, bedrock. The wall follows natures lines. All that nature provided originally, combined with a little man made intervention, has created a 300 year history. I do wonder just how many father's mothers, grandparents and uncles and aunts have lifted their precious little person up to let the children see just a little bit more... As a footnote, William Boyd the Canadian Pathologist was born in this village and a certain Jimmy MacBeath, a famous local wandering singer. Indeed many have left and many returned just to take a look at the wall, and reflect. Walls seem to get bad press these days, and rightly so, but for this one I feel honoured to have had some fantastic times in the vicinity of this big old stone structure and think of it now as a sort of stone crocodile, it forms a beautiful curve rather like a dinosaurs tail at times, of course with eyes of a child in mind anything can be anything I guess...
